Plans for 2006
During the Second Economist Roundtable, which took place in Kyiv last November, President Viktor Yushchenko told about 150 chief executive offices and top managers from Ukraine, Russia, Europe and the United States about the government's plans to stabilize and modernize the economy in 2006. He said 2006 should be "a year of reforms," especially for the energy sector, education, the coal industry, the judicial system, the medical sector and the pension system. The government also plans to invest in the production of rockets, aircraft and ships.
He added that Ukraine would "transparently and publicly" privatize a number of key strategic enterprises, including Ukrtelecom, the Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant and the Odessa Port Plant.
Yushchenko also predicted that inflation would fall in 2006 to about 8.4%, and that foreign investment would grow.
The Economist organized the roundtable in which the American Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) was the exclusive business association partner.
